Shaping the sustainability agenda

With the scientific resources and knowledge at our disposal, DSM has a unique opportunity right now to influence and shape the sustainability agenda. But of course we cannot do it alone. We encourage our people to get involved in sustainability on a personal level through their professional and personal networks; while on an organizational level we work a hugely diverse range of like-minded people - from the United Nations, to governments, NGOs, academia and other private companies.

Financial contributions

In keeping with our mantra of doing well by doing good and creating brighter lives for all we don’t just give our time, energy and resources to shaping the sustainability agenda; we also contribute cash. In 2017 our total contributions to trade associations and other tax-exempt groups totalled some €2.6 million - with significant contributions (in alphabetical order) to CEFIC, Council for Responsible Nutrition, Seafood Nutrition Partnership, VNCI and WEF. It’s an annual contribution that has risen steadily over the past five years (from €1.715m in 2013). 

Customer engagement

We work every day with customers on new sustainability ideas and initiatives with the potential to create value for everyone – in everything from the co-development of products (especially our Brighter Living Solutions), to disclosure of sustainability declarations, testing methodologies, and joint research and communications. 

Our value chains: Creating value for all

Transparency with plastics

Being transparent in our carbon footprint declarations is not only important for DSM, but also for our customers wanting to reduce carbon emissions across their own value chain. Which is why we make the carbon footprint of various compounds in our thermoplastics freely available to customers.

Great taste, less salt

Replacing salt in our diets without reducing the taste can be tricky - which is why we invented Maxarome®, a 100% natural yeast savory taste enhancer. In a scientific study conducted in partnership with Unilever we successfully replaced 25% of the salt content in soup with the highly concentrated Maxarome (which represented just 1% of the total recipe). The result: food that tastes good while benefitting health.

Keeping shipping safe

When a 27,000 ton container ship broke free of its moorings and ruptured an oil pipeline during a storm in the Port of Rotterdam, DSM stepped in to help deliver ShoreTension®, a revolutionary vessel mooring system that improves operational efficiency, speed, worker safety and environmental impact. Initiated by the port authority KRVE, the project was a  four-way partnership that also included commercial shipping equipment provider Hoenderop BV and Gleistein Ropes.

Combating malnutrition

We work with customers and all kinds of other organizations to combat malnutrition and tackle disease. We’re a long-term strategic partner to the UN World Food Programme in the supply of micronutrient powders and supplements for fighting what we call ‘hidden hunger’; and we also distribute micronutrients through other commercial channels - for example to the South African Department of Health and its patients. Meanwhile, in Asia we found a way to develop fortified rice kernels with the look and taste of normal rice (historically a major barrier to take-up) and are now looking to expand this further afield.

Measuring milk with Nestlé

When our customer Nestlé was as interested as ourselves in measuring the environmental, social and health impacts of a fortified milk product in Asia, we joined forces. The resulting project led not only to greater insights and recommendations for developing more sustainable products; but also to better integration of sustainability into innovation and communication. As Anne Roulin, Global R&D Sustainability Manager Nestlé commented "The collaboration supports a mutual cross-fertilization of ways of working in the area of sustainability and innovation, beneficial for the early identification of new opportunities as well as mitigation of areas of risk".

A strong, sustainable – and circular – value chain is only as strong as its weakest link. Which is why we work with our suppliers to make it a reality – in everything from packaging and logistics to reducing raw materials and carbon emissions.

Strengthening our value chains

Keeping emissions ship-shape

The high seas remain an essential part of our modern world. Some 90% of global trade goes by sea every day; and 30% of DSM’s transport is seaborne – which equates to about 40,000 box containers per year. While we’ve reduced the carbon footprint of our own distribution activities by working with partners, there was only so much we could within our own value chain.

Which is why we partnered with AB InBev, AkzoNobel, Friesland Campina and Huntsman to form the BICEPS Network (Boosting Initiatives for Collaborative Emission reduction with the Power of Shippers). The aim is to develop a common approach to sustainability in the global procurement of ocean freight and the selection of shipping lines.

The network uses the BICEPS Rating System, which analyses the sustainability performance of shipping lines in five categories: communication and reporting on sustainability; emissions and target setting; improvement projects; cross-modality collaboration; and long-term ambitions. This rating is then used not only for selecting shippers, but also to encourage sustainable development.

One nice benefit is that it’s inclusive - enabling small-scale innovators in the industry to connect directly with the shipping lines. The bottom line: when it comes to reducing emissions and doing our bit to arrest climate change this network has proved that we’re better together.

Sustainable supply chains in China

We’re working with the Consulate General of the Netherlands in Shanghai on a project for sustainable supply chains in China. The Consulate partnered with two professional CSR advisors, China National Textile & Apparel Council and Solidaridad China, for this three-year Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) project.

The project established a Sustainable Supply Chain Management Platform for Dutch Businesses in China to provide training on Environment, Health and Safety (EHS), CSR management system and labor issues. Participants are supported with their own SHE programs, energy efficiency improvements and footprint reductions and communications between employees and management.

Sustainable sourcing

We assess the Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions of all our global sourcing decisions. For example, using a lifecycle assessment for the supply of nitrogen we can assess the impact of scope 2 and 3 GHG emissions for each supply option. This in turn enables us to source a supply at guaranteed quality, cost - and GHG impact. For example, the DSM Dyneema plant in Heerlen, the Netherlands was able to reduce the annual GHG emissions associated with its supply of nitrogen by a huge 42%.

Reducing hydrogen chloride

Our nutritional purchasing team worked on replacing a 1% hydrogen chloride (HCI) solution used at its Dalry site (UK) with a more concentrated solution that’s diluted on site. Aside from the economic benefits of transporting far smaller volumes of liquid, the initiative also sparked an environmental benefit: a 560-ton CO2 emission reduction - the equivalent of planting 15,000 trees.
